Italian Cultural Institute - London: Italy's Great War

Italy's Great War

The experiences of soldiers on the Italian front, 1915-18

To mark the centenary of Italy's entry into the First World War, leading Italian and British scholars discuss how soldiers serving on the Alpine front in 1915-18 experienced the three and a half years of inhospitable conditions and often brutal fighting. Using, among other sources, the private diaries of soldiers conserved in the Archivio Diaristico Nazionale (Pieve Santo Stefano) and the Imperial War Museum (London), they will consider how rank and file troops and officers endeavoured to make sense of a conflict that led to the deaths of more than 600,000 Italians and which, far from creating greater national unity - as so many had hoped it would in the early summer of 1915 - left the country profoundly divided politically.

  • Christopher Duggan - Professor of Modern Italian History and Director of the Centre for Italian History at the University of Reading and author of a number of books.
